Photography Lounge, counted

I created Photography Lounge, a community for photographers on Discord. It opened shop in July 2020 when I was 15, and since then has become the largest photography community on the platform. I pulled its all-time numbers and created data illustrations of its growth and engagement.

A strong thank you to Ced, Seth, Zivi and Gunthy for leading the team and community so well.

The chatter

2020202120222023202420252026

The busiest month ever was January 2026: 425,712 messages from 2,860 people, one every 6 seconds for the whole month. The first 9 months were already doing 62,182 messages a month.

There was no single virality event; it truly was a blood, sweat and tears situation. 92,439 people have walked through the door since 2020 and 41,947 are still here. The last twelve months added 11,650 — about 32 a day, every day. Each 10,000 has taken about a year: 10k in Feb 2023, 20k in Aug 2024, 30k in Aug 2025, 40k in Jun 2026.

Unlike most communities, the heavy hitters didn't all arrive on day one — new regulars keep showing up every year and staying. Bars run from each person's first message to their last, and opacity is message volume; 32 of the 41 bars reach the right edge, meaning they were still posting this summer.

Peak is 1pm Pacific4pm on the East Coast, evening in Europe; the quietest hour is 10pm Pacific. Mons are the busiest day. A community spread across every time zone never fully sleeps — the darkest cell is only 0.8% of all messages.

Of the people posting for the first time, how many got a reply or an @-mention within 24 hours — hover a quarter
2020202120222023202420252026

In the first quarter, 64% of newcomers heard back within a day. At 41,947 members it's 31% — which, for a room where a stranger's first message competes with 11,486 others a day, is a number I'm pretty proud of.

Room temperature

2020202120222023202420252026

The typical gap in #lounge has been under 10s every month since July 2021; lately it's 9s. That is a conversation, not a feed.

A year after their first message, 20% of the 2020 founders were still posting, versus 16% of people who first posted in 2024. Retention drifts down as a room gets bigger — but it hasn't collapsed, which for a 40,000-person server is the surprising part. (Curves stop where a cohort hasn't been around long enough to measure.)

Canon led for five years. Nikon is the story of the last two — from a distant third to overtaking Canon in 2025Q3. Fuji peaked in 2022 and faded; Leica never gets above a whisper. Film talk has held steady the whole time, and Lightroom beats Photoshop in every single quarter.
